Churubusco units were called to assist LaOtto and Avilla fire departments on a house fire at approximately 9:00 p.m. Monday night.
Upon arrival crews were sent into the interior to assist with extinguishment only to find that the home was heavily involved and conditions were deteriorating quickly.
The old “balloon frame” construction home allowed fire to travel in hidden areas and would flare up in unexpected places. To add to the already dangerous situation, it was discovered the home had a full basement underneath and was heavily involved.
As the stubborn fire continued to burn, crews began to deal with exhaustion, bitter cold and a strong west wind that flamed the fire.
Before long it was decided to go into a defensive mode and not allow any crews inside. Shortly after 3 a.m. Churubusco units cleared the scene and a demolition crew was called in to tear down the residence.
